Cold Weather Camping Guide

Cold Weather Camping Guide - NutHouse Industries

Cold weather camping can be a lot of fun as long as you can stay warm. Whether you are backpacking, car camping, or overlanding, there are a few things that you can do to keep warm during the coldest nights of winter camping.

1) Eat a Hot Meal and Pack a Midnight Snack

Try to eat a hot meal right before you go to bed. Your body needs fuel to generate heat when cold weather camping. Keep a snack handy so that you can replenish your fuel supply and make it to the morning.

2) Go to Bed Warm

A cold sleeping bag will rob some of your heat. Your bag isn’t going to generate heat, rather it will retain the heat you put into it. Do some jumping jacks or other exercises before you get into your bag. If you get cold in the middle of the night, you can do sit-ups, push-ups, or other exercises inside of your sleeping bag.

3) Don’t Sleep Directly on the Ground

Get some insulation between you and the ground when cold weather camping. A sleeping pad will prevent the ground from sucking all of the heat out of you.

4) Radiant Heat

Fill a water bottle with hot liquid and place it at the bottom of your sleeping bag. Make sure the container is suitable to hold hot liquids and never use boiling hot liquids. You should periodically check the lid for tightness because as the liquid cools, the lid can leak. You can also place a hand warmer in your socks, gloves, between your thighs, or under your armpits for extra warmth.

5) Wear the Right Kind of Clothing

When you’re cold weather camping or over landing, you should avoid cotton clothing. Cotton holds in moisture that will make your winter camping trip miserable. Wear base layers and insulation that are made from polypropylene, wool, fleece, or other synthetics. Pack a pair of heavy socks specifically for sleeping in. Do not wear the same socks that you wore all day long. You can wear a hat, neck warmer, or gloves to bed. Flip your damp socks and gloves inside out and stuff them down your sleeping bag. Your body heat will help dry them out by morning.

6) Use Your Extra Clothes for Added Insulation

Stuff tomorrow’s clothes in your sleeping bag for more insulation and to preheat them for the morning. You can drape your rain jacket overtop of your sleeping bag to help trap the heat in. Be careful not to overstuff or flatten you sleeping bag with too many clothes, this will prevent loft.

7) Bladder Check

Use the bathroom before you get into bed. There is nothing worse than getting out of a warm sleeping bag to use the toilet. Keep a pee bottle close and make sure it feels differently than your drinking bottle. That way when your fumbling around in the dark you don’t grab the wrong bottle. Ladies should consider a Shewee or similar device. You can place your full bottle in the bottom of your sleeping bag for a little extra warmth.

8) Ventilation

Don’t exhale into your sleeping bag. Crack open a window or vent to prevent condensation from forming.

Bonus Tip: Stay Warm in one of our Expedition Trailers or Vehicles!

10 Winter Maintenance Items for Your Jeep

Top 10 Jeep Winter Maintenance Items

January 8, 2016 By NutHouse Industries

10 Winter Maintenance Items for Your Jeep

10 Winter Maintenance Items for your Jeep or Trail Ride

It’s cold out and you wish spring would get here so you can take the top off the Jeep JK Wrangler and head out to the trails. There are plenty of things to do to your off road vehicle during the winter season and plenty of custom gear and upgrades available for your ride. The following is a list of (10) items you should check and service this winter before heading to the trail in the spring.

1) Fluids and Leaks

Check all fluid levels and look for signs of leaks. Get under the Jeep or your favorite ride and check the engine, transmission, transfer case and differentials. Check your axle seals and pinion seals. If you see any visible oil seepage or damp areas, Trace down the leak and have the part serviced. A leaking seal can quickly end a ride when a bearing fails or a moving part seizes up.

2) Wheels and Tires

Check your Jeep wheels or rims and tires. Look for deep cuts, bent rim edges and debris between the rim and tire. Check the inside wheel lips as well. If you find debris stuck that you can’t pull out, the tires will need to be dismounted, cleaned, remounted and balanced. This relatively easy task can prevent you from having a flat tire on the trail.

3) Driveshaft and U Joints

Check your driveshaft for excessive play or leaking seals at the u joints. U joints are fairly inexpensive to replace when they are worn. They become quite expensive when they fail and damage the drive shaft yokes. If the joints are tight and sealed, make sure you put grease in any fittings you find on the drive shaft yoke or u joints. A little maintenance goes a long way in preventing failure of parts.

4) Suspension

Check and tighten your suspension mounting points, skid plate bolts, shock bolts and any other low hanging fasteners under the vehicle. Fasteners can come loose over time and low hanging points can be damaged off road. A loose bolt on the trail or street can create a very dangerous situation!

5) Battery and Battery Cables

Check your battery and battery cables for loose connections and corrosion. Winches create drain on the battery, cause heat at the cables and demand higher charging requirements. All of these things contribute to loose clamps and corrosion but can be avoided with a little bit of quick maintenance.

6) Brakes

Check your brakes for wear. Dirt, water and mud wear out brakes. The oversize tires we put on our vehicles require more braking. The brakes wear faster than on a street driven vehicle. It’s an easy check and could save you from a dangerous incident off road if your brakes were to fail due to wear and tear. This is also a good time to check the emergency brake and adjust the linkage.

7) Recovery Gear

Check the condition of your recovery gear. Look for abrasions on straps and ropes. If they are worn, replace them. Clean your straps. Lubricate your d-rings. These are items you may need in a hurry during an off road recovery. A damaged, seized or broken item could spell disaster during a recovery.

8) Tools

Check the condition of and inventory the tools you carry. Now is the time to replace the broken screw driver or retrieve the missing wrench you loaned to a fellow trail rider.

9) Spare Parts

Check and inventory the spare parts and fluids you carry. Replace anything missing.

10) New Friends and Places

Attend a 4X4 club meeting, AEV Event or one of our Nuthouse Industries events! You might meet some new friends or find new places to go off road with your newly upgraded JK Wrangler, TJ Wrangler or Ram Truck.

If you have questions or are unsure of how to do any of these items and would rather have our team of professionals perform them, call Nuthouse Industries at 513-899-2342. We would be happy to provide you with a quote for these services.

Aluminum Trailers are a Green Product

June 8, 2012 By NutHouse Industries

We are often asked why we prefer aluminum over steel for trailers and why All Aluminum Trailers are actually a GREEN product. In this post we will examine what makes aluminum trailers green and why.

We have already looked at Why Aluminum, the benefits of aluminum trailers, the maintenance of steel vs. aluminum trailers and the strength of steel vs. aluminum trailers but today we are going to looker closer at the green aspects of aluminum trailers, truck bodies, fire and rescue bodies, and boxes.

Aluminum trailers have inherent GREEN attributes.

  • Recyclable
  • Use less energy
  • Better Fuel Mileage
  • Better Tire Mileage
  • Liftetime Product
  • No Rusting
  • No Cracking
  • Lighter Material Costs Less to Transport
  • Allows you to haul more cargo at once – less trips
  • Stronger and Tougher
  • Easily Repairable
  • Save $ on Multiple Repairs
  • Lighter than steel AND fiberglass (composite)
  • You can pass it on to the next generation

Aluminum is Recyclable, Sustainable and Versatile

So what does it mean to be a green product? For a material to really be considered green, it should have:

  • Low impact on the environment
  • Favor environmentalism and conservation—the practice of protecting and conserving the natural environment we enjoy and the resources we are given. We must be good stewards of these resources.

So what exactly makes aluminum a green material? Aluminum is recyclable, sustainable, and versatile. These three qualities are key for any material being used to construct a green product. Over time, aluminum has proven to be one of the most important materials in a successful recycling program.

Aluminum offers:

  • High scrap value
  • Widespread consumer acceptance
  • Aluminum recycling enjoys significant industry support

Recycling

Aluminum Recycling is viewed as a closed loop that carries the material from the point-of-purchase to the end user and from the consumer (when the product is discarded) to collection, sorting and processing, fabrication, and eventually back to the consumer as a finished product. While it may be nice that the aluminum material is recyclable, ultimately the material must find its way back to a viable end use.

Recycling is important for many reasons.

Landfills will eventually lack additional capacity so it will be necessary to reduce the solid waste stream. Aluminum recycling diverts significant amounts of the aluminum material for reuse. Businesses and policy makers are often driven by the economic factors of recycling.  Recycling of aluminum saves money because the raw material recaptured by recycling costs less than the aluminum materials derived through mining.

Energy conservation is becoming a necessity for environmental and economic reasons.  Aluminum recycling saves 95 percent of the energy required to produce aluminum from raw materials. Conserving these natural resources is the right thing to do and is important.

It takes four pounds of raw bauxite ore to produce one pound of aluminum. Every pound of recycled aluminum saves four pounds of ore.

Aluminum has proven to be one of the most important materials in successful recycling programs. Aluminum offers high scrap value, widespread consumer acceptance, and aluminum recycling enjoys significant industry support.

All aluminum trailers, truck bodies, fire bodies, rescue bodies, truck toppers and poppers and forms of aluminum can be recycled, from aluminum foil to automobile parts, aluminum extrusions and aluminum trailers. Storm doors, window frames, and aluminum ladders are among the more common household extrusions that can be recycled, but large items such as rail cars and trailers can yield an especially impressive financial return when harvested for scrap.

The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) reports that the chief executive of a prominent primary metals producer recently cited the fact that, when hundreds of all-aluminum railcars had been returned to the company in 1993 at the end of their 25-year lease, the value of the recycled metal was equal to 90 percent of the original manufacturing cost!

Aluminum can be recycled and reused over and over. Even through this continued recycling, aluminum doesn’t lose any of its characteristic attributes. Simply stated, there is no loss of quality in using recycled aluminum.

Eco-friendly qualities

In addition to recyclability aluminum has other eco-friendly qualities:

  • Light weight-to-strength ratio
  • Reduction in weight of materials
  • Extrudability and ease of fabrication and repairs

So how do aluminum trailers fit into the green movement? From design and construction to the liftetime nature of the all aluminum trailers, aluminum trailers use less resources while reducing impact on people’s health and the environment.

Aluminum Trailers are the Material of Choice for a Greener World.
